NORTHERN TERRITORY / RankWire.AI / – During a training drill at Mount Bundey on Monday, a 28-year-old Australian Army serviceman lost his life in a vehicle rollover. Five other soldiers sustained injuries in the same event. The Australian Defence Force confirmed the incident on Tuesday, informing that the soldier’s family had been notified. The accident took place at the Mount Bundey Training Area, roughly 100 kilometres south-east of Darwin. Defence requested the public to respect the privacy of the affected personnel and their families.

Northern Territory Police responded to the scene around 4:20 p.m. on October 5. CareFlight NT and St John Ambulance were also present. Two injured soldiers were airlifted by helicopter to Royal Darwin Hospital at approximately 7:30 p.m. The remaining three were transported by aircraft around 9:30 p.m. All five continued receiving medical care on Tuesday. The authorities from the Northern Territory supported the medical evacuations from the isolated military site.
Chief of Army Lieutenant General Susan Coyle announced that Defence had initiated a probe into the fatal rollover. Military police secured the scene. An accident investigation board will review what happened. Northern Territory Police Commissioner Martin Dole stated that police are working with Defence and are investigating on behalf of the coroner. The cause of the crash has not yet been disclosed. Coyle emphasized that investigators need time to determine the facts before the Army responds to their findings.
Investigation Underway
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese expressed his condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the fallen soldier. Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Richard Marles also shared his sympathies, calling the death a tragic loss for the Army. Defence stated it is supporting the families involved. Northern Territory Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro also extended her condolences. She thanked emergency teams for their efforts in evacuating the injured soldiers from Mount Bundey to Royal Darwin Hospital.
Mount Bundey serves as a key training ground for the Australian Army, located south-east of Darwin. Both Australian and allied forces use the site for exercises, including live-fire drills. The incident marks the second Australian Army training fatality in 2026. Earlier in May, Warrant Officer Class Two Lachlan Muddle, a member of the Special Air Service Regiment, died after a mid-air collision during parachute training at Jervis Bay. Another paratrooper was injured but survived with minor wounds.
Previous Mount Bundey Fatality
The Mount Bundey Training Area was also the scene of a fatal incident in 2017. Private Jason Challis lost his life during a live-fire urban training session at the base. A Northern Territory coronial inquest later looked into his death. The Department of Defence pleaded guilty in Darwin Local Court for failing to fulfill workplace health and safety duties. The 2026 rollover is a separate event and remains under investigation.
The Defence department has not publicly identified the soldier who died on Monday beyond confirming his age and gender. Officials have not disclosed his unit or the exact training activity underway at the time. The Australian Defence Force promised to share more information when available. Police continue supporting the coronial investigation, while the Army conducts its internal review. No conclusions have been announced regarding the cause of the rollover or factors that contributed to the crash.
